The Cheat Meal Is A Big Fat Lie, But…

How many of you have ever cheated on a diet? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Well, if you’re like me, your hand may have shot up instantly. It’s can be so unbelievably difficult to resist the temptation of a hot delicious slice of pizza or a sinfully sweet slice of cheesecake, both of which are most likely not a part of ANY diet…well at least any diet that works. I know that for me personally, I have to dig deep to keep myself from going on a binge-fest at times…because we all know that just ONE slice of pizza may not satisfy my hunger completely. I mean, who doesn’t struggle with their will power crumbling when their favorite food is brought before them?

And that’s why I have failed my diets in the past…because I cheated. One cheat meal turned into a cheat day , which turned into a weekend of cheating. And don’t even get me started on the whole “I’m on vacation so I don’t have to diet,” thing…yep, been there done that. One too many times.hilarious-quote-about-diets

This is why I’m about to propose something that may sound a little crazy and has been quite controversial…but I’m going to do it anyways, because it’s worked for me and kept me from eating everything in the refrigerator AND ordering chinese in the same night. I’m talking about the FREEBIE meal. I’m not saying freebie DAY, or freebie WEEKEND, both of which you may as well toss out all the hard work you put in that week out the window. No, I’m talking about designating one day a week (let’s pick friday) as the day where you get to pick whatever you want for ONE meal. You can go out and have those two slices of pizza, or a cheeseburger and fries, or a slice of that chocolate fudge cake with vanilla ice cream. Whatever you can think of, go out a get it. But remember, only ONE meal’s worth! That doesn’t mean you get to have appetizers, main course, AND dessert. Just pick one course and enjoy. Don’t feel guilty. Don’t eat it sneakily in the bathroom, thinking that you’re doing something wrong. Just relax and know that one meal a week you’re not restricted by calories or carbs or sugar, and that it’s your choice of what you eat.

That being said, the freebie meal is not for everyone, and definitely not recommended for people that lack self control when it comes to their diet (i.e you wouldn’t be able to stop eating after ONE meal). The idea of the freebie meal is more so directed towards people that are close to their goal weight or are already maintaining. So use this as motivation to get to your goal weight so that you can start incorporating this into your lifestyle.

So, for those of you that this applies to, let me tell you how freeing this can be. For one, I don’t feel like I’m on a super strict diet and will never get to enjoy my favorite foods ever again. And two, It also helps me be better on my diet throughout the week because I know that Friday (or whatever day you choose) is just around the corner. It’s something to look forward to, and it’s the break that I sometimes feel like I need.

Losing weight can be hard, and dieting sometimes can feel like a monumental task, but as long as you find the diet that works for you (and maybe incorporate that freebie meal once in a while) you just may find yourself succeeding this time around. You don’t have to feel deprived, or think, “I’m not going to be able to have ice cream or pasta for six months…” That kind of mindset is what leads to binging and cheating on your diet…and then before you know it you feel too far gone to start up again.

So if you’re where I was a several years ago, defeated from diet plans that just made me hungry and tempted to cheat almost on a daily basis, then I suggest you giving the freebie meal a go. It’s helped me gain MORE control over what I put into my body, as ironic as that sounds, and ultimately take back control of my life.

At the end of the day food is delicious, and some of that delicious food is bad for you. But allowing the occasional freebie meal never hurt anyone, in fact I think it only helps.
